If you didn’t catch the documentary Life In a Day on BBC2 last week, it’s well worth tracking down before Saturday. Why? Well on the 12th of November BBC2 are launching Britain In a Day, their own version of the film.

Capturing the zeitgeist of our generation – all footage was filmed on the 24th of July 2010 – Life In a Day is a digital time capsule for the kids of the future to unearth via the internet, showing just what it was like to be around in the 21st century.

Encouraging you to pick up a camera, the BBC2 project aims to portray life a little closer to home, inviting the people of Britain to film their lives over 24 hours. Record your thoughts, daily life, events and aspirations and upload to the Britain In a Day channel on YouTube. As a snapshot of time it shows as humans, just how weird, wonderful and ultimately different we are to each other.

Led by Ridley Scott as executive producer, the user-generated project comes as part of a digital curation drive by the BBC with a focus on archiving life as we know it. With a list of personalities including Stephen Fry, Ewan McGregor and Noel Clarke involved, the footage will be edited into a documentary premiered in cinemas and broadcast on BBC2 ahead of the London Olympics next year.

‘Four nations. 24 hours. 61 million perspectives’ is the tagline as the BBC pushes to celebrate, whether by ethnic background, religion or class, the diversity of Britain. This social project will make film history as part of a wider picture about what it means to be British, a topic under much discussion at the moment.

The BBC suggest considering the following questions when filming to make your entry truly personal:

What do you see when you look out of your window and how does this make you feel?

What do you like or dislike about the UK?

What makes you happy and where are you happiest?

What are your vices and guilty pleasures?

What is the most important thing in your life at the moment?

Check the tutorials for dos and don’ts to get your creative juices flowing. Get involved on November 12th by filming your day, no matter how amateur, and simply uploading to http://www.youtube.com/britaininaday.

What do you think of the project? What would you film to represent a day in your life? Is this type of curation the way forward in ensuring we preserve the memory of today for future generations? As usual , let us know by leaving a comment.

You may have seen the posters on the tube or one of the many displays around London. The idea is simple. The whole of London has been turned into an exhibition, with historic spots around town having photo installations or posters showing a key moment from the past, with a little bit of blurb about it. I’ve seen a few now including Trafalgar Square and Soho, and will start hunting down some of the others.

A free iPhone App offers a map of all the spots across town and an augmented view to help people find spots near them. The campaign brings London’s rich history to life through a simple experiential event.

So far so good… I obviously had to check out the website www.youarehere.com. First impressions where really disappointing and the online element just didn’t achieve the same level of engagement as the rest of the campaign. From a design perspective the ‘page’ is cluttered and content hierarchy is unclear. I was expecting a whole microsite around the campaign with more photos and content – maybe real stories from people associated with each photo. In fact it’s just a poor landing page – they may as well had not pushed the URL on all the posters as heavily. It’s a shame because there is a really big opportunity to add a further level of engagement online through user interaction and social media. I’d have liked to have seen an online platform for discussion and information exchange – helping to paint an even richer background to each of the spots and events, from local peoples knowledge.

I just wish the online element was stronger, or even just more clearly sign-posted. Don’t get me wrong the iPhone App is simple and fun, but trying to find it in the App store was difficult. Maybe I was having a stupid moment! I tried searching for ‘Museum of London’ first – nothing. Then ‘You are here’ – nothing again! Finally I realised the small print on the landing page which read “Just search for Streetmuseum on iTunes”. OK I downloaded it but this third campaign title was a little hidden and why they couldn’t highlight the App name more if it was so different (especially on the posters), or even hyperlink to the iTunes store (like I have).

Overall it’s a real shame because the thinking behind the idea is beautiful, the offline execution is done brilliantly, and the iPhone itself is good fun. In summary ‘must try harder next time’.

This funny article gives a checklist of signs that mean you might not be a hard-core gamer anymore!

For those of you who used to play videogames all night and “have a gaming history that stretches back beyond the PlayStation generation to the SNES, Megadrive, Amiga and ZX Spectrum” – time has passed and “you’ve quietly come to realise that you’re not the hard-core gamer you used to be. Even your Xbox 360 Gamertag seems far too ’sensible’. How do you know that a mid-life gaming crisis is setting in? Watch out for these warning signs…”

Signs include: preferring to play against the computer to save face; only playing while your girlfriend is out because she doesn’t like you playing; going days instead of hours without playing; and fondling remembering a ‘golden age’ of gaming.

You should read the full article though and see how you compare.
