Somerset House in London, the home of LFW 2010

Few will have missed that another London Fashion Week is getting closer. Just as we are getting those jumpers and boots out of the back of the wardrobe in preparation for the arrival of autumn, the SS11 collections will be on show on the catwalks. Arranged by the British Fashion Council, the event will be held at Somerset House from 17-22 September.

I’ve been pleased to follow the developments of LFW, as BFC gradually has gotten more and more involved with digital and social media. Now using social channels for regular fashion week comms across Twitter and Facebook, they are building up a decent sized community and increasing the touch points with their audiences. Still, I can’t help but feel that they are missing a trick… Most posts consist of a number of fashion brand- and high fashion profile names, all fighting for a minute in the spotlight. Is this really social CRM? Are they looking to engage with people, or simply to amplifying? You tell me:

A typical Facebook post from BFC - information overload?

The BFC have no social media channels dedicated for their wider work, but use the LFW channels for ‘news updates’. They dedicate a part of their website for the big hitters in the fashion blogosphere in a ‘blog portal’, however the feeling here is that social is more of an after thought rather than a priority.

I’m sorry to moan, I didn’t mean to interrupt the festive build up prior to Friday. But there are so many cool and interactive ways in which the BFC could further engage with the legions of fashionistas and fashionistos out there. I’m still hoping for more!

I get where you’re coming from Lexy! Fashion is often seen as a glamorous, aspirational industry where the famous and beautiful rub shoulders… So are the British Fashion Council deliberately excluding us ‘common people’ from the scene by not allowing us to interact effectively via social networks. Or maybe it’s just a case of the BFC not having their finger on the social pulse?
