Following ilovedesign.com’s first 8×8 event, the videos of all the speakers have now been uploaded into the ‘Exclusives’ section of the ILD site.
Although not a designer myself, I have always had a passion for the creative arts. As such, I was not sure what to expect from the speakers – whether I would be sitting bored listening to new fangled design techniques or be stuck listening to an endless tirade of unashamed self-promotion.
What I got was neither boring nor promotional. All the speakers were absolutely superb on the night, with my personal highlight being the magnificent John Bateson. His speech was not only inspirational, but extremely entertaining. I particularly admired his approach to the brief, choosing to frame a talk on ‘inspiration’ around various (and amusing) objects from around his home.
I think anyone working in the creative industries could take a lot from John’s underlying message, that being to ‘think deeper’. For me personally, the greatest ‘Eureka!’ moments come from one’s ability to strip back to the fundamental and find new connections between people, objects and their environments. So, despite John’s discussion feeling quite random, it spoke volumes about how best to approach a project to achieve the most creative and insightful outcome. I’m really looking forward to the next event for more of the same.

nice one coxy
firstly, wow! what an awesome collection of presentations. Well done to all.
secondly, I have to agree that John Bateson done well. I also really liked Jamie from Airside. They probably just edged it as my joint faves for the night. But without sounding w*nky the standard was really higher… actually higher than I expected.

Great event! For me too the night was all about John Bateson. He is brill
The highlight of which has got to be the matching Bow-tie/Dress combo – classic!
Alas Mr Wieck’s talk about the space time continuum (or similar?) was a bit over my head, but very interesting none the less.
Watch out for Vaughan Oliver though – he’s a bit of a debaser
