Today we received another shipment of 26 Royal Mail brochures which were not for us. Impressively, the volume of brochures has increased – we used to only receive 15 brochures with incorrect details! These brochures come through every other month to demonstrate the power of ‘marketing through mail’. The irony of the fact that these brochures are going to the wrong people at the wrong address is not lost on me. Hmm. Shall I use them for our next campaign? There data is obviously very reliable…
The really sad part is not the fact that we have spent man hours chasing them trying to correct their bi-monthly mistake but the fact that these 26 brochures weigh in at about 5kg of glossy paper, full colour print and shrink wrap plastic – this issue actually uses metallics and embossing too. Imagine the carbon footprint of that production any way. Now imagine how much is wasted by bad data. Thankfully we recycle ours (when we contacted them before we were told to just throw them away!) but imagine how many end up in the bin at thousands of other incorrect addresses. Another sad thing is that this wastage also costs money. Money which they make from charging their customers – which is you and me. So their waste not only contaminates our planet but we are also paying for the privilege of it!
